Guidelines For Submissions
Have something to get off your chest in Harlem? Don’t see an issue you care about being discussed in the news, or a poem, or do you see an issue you care about and want to write about it? Turn your thoughts into editorial content for Harlem World Magazine (HWM) readers around the world (60% in Harlem, 20% in the USA, and 20% around the world).
We’re looking for quality substantive, provocative, well-argued submissions on the wide range of subjects covered including politics, business, arts, health, style, travel, food, op-ed and things to do — almost anything and everything related to Harlem.
Here’s how to maximize your efforts:

- Have a clear, forceful opinion. Most published HWM pieces will state a position near the top and then make their case.
- Keep it short. From 500 and 1,000 words written; 1-5 minutes if audio or video (with embed link) and 3 links (please send as a Microsoft Word document).
- Be timely. Select a topic that is tightly pegged to the news, celebration, or issues of the day.
- Stick to the facts and answer the 5 Ws. Include quotes or hyperlinks to credible nonpartisan news sources and research publications. In addition, as long as you always include the 5 Ws’ (who, what, where, when, and why, sometimes how – for bonus) you’re on right track (here’s an example).
- Images: Photographs, charts, info-graphics, videos, etc., should be lo less than 900 pixels wide and 600 pixels high, high-resolution images (if not we will replace and a fee could be incurred).
- Rights. The publisher can use your article one time in electronic form only. You can continue to license your article to other publishers with these rights. We have the right to archive your article, making your work accessible indefinitely to readers unless you suggest otherwise.

We suggest to everyone to think of what editorial, special section, and events your story might fit. Once you have the category of your event and the dates locked down get ready to submit it and always have a beginning, middle, and end.
Submissions
Submissions should be entirely original to HWM (i.e., not submitted or published elsewhere, including on social media). As with most HWM content, the content is available for syndication to any other content organization, website, or blog that wants to run them please contact us first before using it.
Submissions will be selected at the sole discretion of HWM editors based on news value, timeliness, and variety. They will be edited for clarity, accuracy, and style, but editorial staffing will have the final say in the overall content.
We are selective on compensation for publishing on HWM for freelance articles. We do offer the opportunity to help enhance social and civic engagement and civilize the discourse on issues across Harlem.
If you are a copyright holder that would like something removed please message us and we will respond. Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statutes that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational, or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
Op-Eds
Op-eds should be topical and relevant to HWM’s mission of inspiring equitable change in cities and speak to ideas and policies that can effect such change. They should express a strong, informed opinion. (If you’re writing about your organization or the specific work that you do, however, please see “Sponsored Posts,” below.)
All submissions must be original, and not published elsewhere. The maximum length is 1,000 words. We will not consider articles that have already been published, in any form, in print, or online.
We pay a small honorarium for op-eds, but do not guarantee publication in advance of receiving a submission. To submit pieces for consideration, please email harlemworldinfo@yahoo.com, with “Op-Ed Submission” in the subject line.
We review all emails with op-ed submissions.
